Before I forget I need to make a note about the Vista Service Pack 1 audio drivers for the Sigmatel/Intel audio chip, aka “Sony Sound Reality Audio Enhancer”, aka “High Definition Audio CODEC”. I was able to get the drivers to work by unpacking and installing the drivers for a similar model, the VGX-XL3 (STDAUD-01487800-UN.EXE). Both are identified as:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7661&SUBSYS_104D0800

I had previously installed another Sigmatel driver, but it was intended for a laptop, and although it worked, the volume levels were pathetically low compared to in XP. I hope this will save others the headache.

On a related rant, I noticed Sony DRMs their US drivers.. I couldn’t unpack STDAUD-01487800-US.EXE, and it would not install because it checked the model and canceled the installation, but the -UN version unpacked fine and I was able to install the .INF via the Device Manager with no modifications… What’s up sony? You don’t want me to have the latest drivers? Quit locking me out of my hardware. It runs Vista perfectly, I don’t need new hardware.
